Oooof! This short film really gave me all the feelings. Working Summer tells the story of Deborah, a mother living alone in Upstate New York, where she spends her days weaving baskets, gardening, and chatting with her young neighbor, Jerry. When Deborah’s daughter Nora stops by unannounced, she is taken aback to discover the fullness of her mother’s life. Ultimately, this is a story about a parent leaving the nest and a child who must come to terms with it. Written by Lily Weisberg, the film stars Lily’s real-life mother, Deborah Needleman. whom you may remember as the founding editor of Domino Magazine. If you, like me, have been following her world as a basketweaver in Upstate New York, you’ll be happy that Working Summer closely parallels her life. Watch the film on No Budge, a great streaming platform for young and emerging filmmakers.
